This story takes place in Rochester when I worked for Short Brothers
In August 1940 I was working on building the first Stirling bombers. On Wednesday 14th August 1940 Detling aerodrome was bombed and we feared that we would be next as we were only 10 miles away. On Thursday 15th August a German reconnaisance plane went over taking photos and then about 3.30 pm the siren went and everyone went into the field and down into the shelters and for about an hour we were bombed. My wife and my son were on the other side of the Maidstone road and the house was demolished and they were buried but by some miracle they survived under the rubble.
I was totally shaken but when we were reunited we were taken by a complete stranger to a temporary shelter. During that night we were woken up again by severe bombing. We found out later that the only deaths in the Short Brothers factory that night were the chaps who went into the bell shelters.
