George Edwards, my father worked in Swindon Railway Works for over twenty years. His position was unique in that although his employment was full time in the works, his actual employer was the firm of Avery who contracted his services out. With the assistant or an apprentice George Edwards was solely responsible for the repair and maintenance of every scale and weighing machine in use at the factory. These ranged in size from letter scales through to the engine tables. Swindon Railway Works provided him with a guard鈥檚 van, which had been converted into a mobile workshop. This van was moved around the Works according to where he was working at the time. The van contained a small forge and tools and equipment necessary for making and replacing weighing machine parts. George Edwards was highly skilled and ingenious; Such talents were particularly valuable during the shortages of the second world war. Strictly speaking he was not a Works employee. However, his position was the only one of it鈥檚 kind and was of vital necessity at the time, I feel that his contribution should be marked and valued.
