My father had served in the first world war but he was too old for WW2 so he became a special constable. As soon as the sirens went he was on duty and after carrying me down to the basement shelter and making sure every one was safely down there he would put on his uniform and venture out into the Manchester Blitz. This night he had been away about an hour and there was a loud knocking at our front door, my mother put out the lights and opened the door to be greeted by an ARP man with a note book.
I am booking you for showing a light he said which was a serious offence and my mother was most upset. " Whats going on hear" came the voice of a police officer from the street and the ARP man told him. "Right Ill deal with it " said the officer and the ARP man disapeared
For gods sake turn the lights off said my father
the fine would bankrupt us
