I arrived in Lingfield near East Grinstead on 2nd Sept 1939, the day before war was declared, as an 11 year old evacuee with Brockley Central School. In 1944, I remember watching a doodle bug falling on Bridgelands - a shop in London Road - as I was cycling from Lingfield to East Grinstead to go to work. The explosion occured in virtually the same place as the Whitehall Cinema bombing the year before.
