I landed in Normandy in June 1944, a few days after D- Day. Whilst in battle in Holland, my wife received a letter of condolence of my death in North West Europe. She received the letter on a Saturday morning, and as it was a City of London branch, she could not be contacted 鈥榯ill the following Monday, when much apologising was made by the manager. In the meantime my wife had suffered much distress. Shortly after this, my parents鈥 house in Shirley received a direct hit from a V2 Rocket, completely destroying everything they and I owned. Fortunately my parents were not in the house at the time. I rose to the rank of Major in World War II, having started the war as a Private Soldier. To complete 鈥淭he Cost of War鈥 I had quite a difficult five years after I got home in April 1946, as I found it hard to find a decent job.
