"I remember feeling hungry all the time - being hungry all the time, being cold, being grossly unhappy.
I remember guns coming from the sky and people falling to the ground. You could see things like strips of fire falling to the ground.
What you have to remember is that its a convoy of 500 people walking along...with no idea of where we are going. Sleeping on makeshift bedding, on the floor in railway stations, church halls, schools. I remember that. I remember as were walking, people who were looking on, coming to give us some bread - an apple. Someone gave us an apple. We all had a bite. Sharing one apple - can you imagine that? I remember people carrying lots of bundles, getting smaller and smaller as they left them on the roadside - They got tired of carrying them and left them behind. In the end, all we had was what we stood up in. The grown ups I mean. Not the children but, no I remember some children having bundles to carry - bags."
