Daddy and uncle George were in the 鈥淗ome Guard鈥 and when daddy had to go away in the air-force, I asked mummy if daddy had to go in the air-force because he and uncle George couldn鈥檛 catch Hitler! I thought they were running around fields looking for Hitler. I was only about 4 years old.

Daddy was stationed at Loughborough as Police (in the air-force) when he was woken up in the middle of the night and asked to come in and see a crashed French pilot who spoke no English (pop spoke fluent French). When he got there, he found the pilot to be an old friend who he knew very well and managed to converse with him easily. Unfortunately the pilot had a broken leg. The name of the man was Francis Lynch. (They kept in touch with each other and family until pop died at 92 years of age).
