George Edward Andrews

I am the niece of George Edward Andrews, I wondered if you would like this information.

George was born April 24, 1920 at 12, Princes Ave, Wheeler St, Hull, E. Yorks and educated at Paisley St School, Hull. He was employed at Messrs William Cussons Ltd.

He married Jesse F Goldspink 1942 St Martins, Hull, East Yorks and resided at 9 Ainthorpe Grove, Hull, East Yorks.

Pilot Officer George Edward Andrews W.O./A.G. RAFVR. was a wireless operator, air gunner in the R.A.F. which he joined some months before the outbreak of World War II. Sunday 3rd September, the day Britain declared war on Germany, George was one of the first to drop leaflets over Germany. In November 1942 he was on a pathfinding mission when his plane was shot down over Hamburg near to where he is now buried. After being posted missing for two and a half years he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal. The official citation states :

"This officer took part in many sorties, including raids on Le Creusot, Genoa and Milan. He was an exceptionally fine wireless operator and an invaluable member of his aircraft crew. He always displayed skill and undaunted courage of the highest order." His wife and parents received the medal from King George V1 at Buckingham Palace.
