I was ten years old on the 4th September 1939 and I remember the Sirens sounding in Hull for the first time as I wished my Mum a Happy Birthday.
Life changed for us all, we had to fold our clothes carefully each night so we could dress quickly if there was an air raid. Sometimes it was really quiet - usually when we were scared.
Once we had to go to the air raid shelter at lunchtime, we were cooking tripe and onions on a gas ring and had to run in and out of the shelter to stir it to stop it burning - we couldn't waste food then!
