This is a day that I will never forget. I was living with my sister in Gravesend, and it was the day on which my niece and nephew were to be evacuated. I went with my sister and her children to Gravesend Docks at 8am, and watched them being taken aboard a large boat. There were about 300 children and teachers who were to go by sea to Ipswich, and then on to Beccles. Needless to say, there were several hundred parents and relatives to see them off, and, as the boat left the dockside, I had never seen so many people in tears. It was a very sad sight.

We eventually went home, and, later that morning, heard on the radio that war had been declared. Apart from being worried about the war, we were, of course, very worried about the children at sea. During the afternoon, we rang the Police Station (as we had been told) and learned that they had landed safely.
