In 1940 during the Blitz I stayed for six months with Mr and Mrs. Mannings who had a bakery in Lentisbeare in Devon.

Mr. Mannings was quite nice to me but Mrs. Mannings did not like me at all and she went out of her way to show it. My sister, who was six years older than me got on ok with Mrs. Manning鈥檚 because she was old enough to help out in the bakery

I just felt very sad and lonely.

I was later sent on a second evacuation to Mr and Mrs. Barber of Chesterfield in Derbyshire who were the kindest people in the world. I loved my stay with them it was only for 5 months but a very happy time.

In 1977 I made a return visit to Lentisbeare, the bakery had disappeared and the sister of Tony Hatch the musician was living in the building, which housed the bakery.
