I was a young girl during the war. My father who had flat-feet used to drive a lorry. He worked from a petrol station in Clapham, as well as delivering meat to an from markets like Smithfields.

One day there was a huge bomb dropped on Elephant and Castle, and a lot of people were slain. My father was driving past at the time was carrying a load of meat. The police ordered him to dump all his meat, and load the lorry with the bodies of the people killed. That's why the intersection is still a mess today!

I remember a doodlebug coming over and landing on Brixton prison. It landed on stables and killed a lot of horses. I was sick at the time, but I wanted to go an see the horses. When we got there the windows on the upper floors of the prison were shattered, and the Germans were throwing the letters out of them to be posted home. Because the wall, most of the letters were falling short.
