When we think of the world we live in,
Of our endless strife of peace to win.
Of grief, unhappiness, pain and disaster
And selfish people who want to be master.
It makes us wonder at each new birth
Just why we are all put on this earth.
Surely our object should be to gain
The love of our neighbours, the joy of the rain,
The beauty of an opening flower,
To know that God guards us every hour.
At the end of the day when our troubles seem worse,
And a grievance against life we readily nurse,
If we counted our blessings for a while,
Looked on our loved ones with a smile.
That question we ponder at each new birth,
Of why we are all put on this earth,
Could easily be answered by even a child,
By rich and poor and meek and mild.
God gave us life just as a test
To prepare us for our Heavenly rest.
