I was about 18 or 19 at the time and on this day Newark was being bombed at the ball bearing factory Ransome and Marles, and also the pump factory Worthington Simsons in Balderton.
i had been staying with my mother during the air raid because she was on her own that day - I was supposed to be at work but I was allowed home - we lived by the River Trent and I worked at Parnham's flour mill just across the river - When the all clear sounded I was just crossing over the bridge to get back to the office when a German plane swooped down upon me - I froze in my shoes - petrified I could see the pilot quite clearly and thought I would be shot at but he carried on flying over the river looking towards Hull I suppose, so that he could find the North Sea. He didn't have any bombs left, so I suppose he was trying to head for home - I have never been so frightened in my life - I am now 84 years old.
Because I worked in the office of the flour mill - we used to be able to get empty flour sacks - we made all sorts of things - bed covers, pillowcases and table cloths and children's dresses out of these bleached linen flour sacks.
