This story was contributed by Gerald Bradley,74, who was a boy growing up in Castledawson during the war....
In the quiet little village of Castledawson most of the villagers were employed in the linen factory of J.A Clarke.
The factory horn ruled life.It went off 5 times a day, 5 days a week.
With the coming of the war it was a huge change not to hear it.
The bugles took it's place. On a silent winters night in the counrtyside it was errie to hear that sound pierce the air.
In 1945 victory was celebrated in Europe. VE day was declared a day of celebration.
Church bells rang out in the village.
The factory horn which had been silent for years started blowing again!
In the evening a bonfire was lit in the centre of town .... 2 bands led the crowds and the people marched and danced through the village most of the night.
