I was in the Land Army during the war stationed at Sweet Hill and Warren Farm Brighton. One day in 1941 we girls were out haymaking, collecting up the corn stacks. It was a lovely day and felt good to be out in the open air. There were a few conscientious objectors working on the farm and some POWs and one of these men failed to put the 'slacks' on the tractor to move it off the field onto the road. The tractor slipped back down the hill and killed Ken who was aged 28 and married only 2 years.He was a lovely man and it was a nasty experience for us seeing this. We ran down the hill to the cafe at the bottom of Sweet Hill, now Mill Road, to call for help.

We had some good times on the Land Army; if it was a rainy day we would have sing songs around the piano at a cafe in Woodingdean. Sybil played the piano and we would sing Daisy, Daisy, Pack up your troubles, White Cliffs of Dover. We were all young and not too worried about the war. I was in the Land Army from age 17 to 24.

The Canadians were stationed nearby and were involved in lots of scams. They offered us Canadian cigarettes for 拢5 which was a lot of money then. I borrowed the money from my sister and was told not to open the box until we got home. When we did open it we found only 2 packs of cigarettes, and a pack of sardines and lots of paper. Mum was so angry and called the Police but was told they would be long gone.
We tended to live for the day and tried to enjoy ourselves as much as we could.
