Rationing was very tough for everyone. Farmers were not allowed to kill their own animals to feed the family, they too had to be rationed. So no farmer could slaughter an animal for food without getting permission first.

What they were allowed to do was kill any animal that seriously injured itself, say by breaking a leg. If the animal was suffering it could be killed, then the meat used so it wouldn't go to waste.

I can remember a lot of sheep and pigs during the war "fell down holes" and injured themselves. Especially round people's birthdays!
