I was called up 2nd January 1940. Six weeks later I was serving in France and was evacuated to Dunkirk.

I came home to the UK and was firewatching in Liverpool during the Blitz. From there I was sent to the Middle East with the 8th army. I spent six weeks behind German lines in the desert. Conditions were hard and water was rationed. You were only allocated one gallon per day and half of that went to the cookhouse for your meals.

I got as far as Ben Gazi, then we came back to El Alamein and I was posted to the 51st Highland Division. I was in the foreward ammunition point and we supplied ammunition to the gunners. The night of El Alamein (23rd October 1941) was beautifully moonlit but at 9.40pm 800 guns opened up so we didn't get much sleep. I issued ammunition and shells for the guns throughout.

I was in North Africa until the end of the war. It was hard work from morning to night. After the war in North Africa finished I was at the invasion of Sicily then they took us home for the invasion. It was great to come back to Aberdeen.
