I remember not going to school this day, we got the bus to Musselburgh - my mother (Marion) and me - then we got the bus to Dunbar. We got to Belhaven, just outside Dunbar. Inside the house my uncle John was still packing things in his kit bag.

We then walked slowly down to Dunbar station. A snap was taken of me at the station, I can still see Uncle John's face smiling and waving out of the carriage window.

He met up with the rest of the regiment then went on to Gibraltar then Italy. He was killed in northern Italy. Some day I will go and see his grave.

I remember coming home from school one day. Mum was very happy, she said the boys were crossing the Rhine and the Germans were on the run.
