One dayduring the War, my wife's father, Herbert Sefton MM, who was an Auxiliary Fire Man, in the Second World War, from time to time, had to carry out some of their standard training up at The Mere in Scarborough, with the Fire Tender being used to train the Firemen in handling fire hoses, for fighting fires should they occur. This particular day, they had laid the hoses out from the Tender to the edge ot The Mere, ready for use, with the pump being submerged in the water, ready for use. Herbert, bent down over one of the hoses, making ready to pick up the nozzle end, when suddenly somebody turned the pump on. The water pressure picked up and shot along the length of the hose at an alarming rate. The hose rolled itself up and catching Herbert unawares, sumersaulted him head over heels, staight into The Mere! He remembered after that soaking, not to stand astride any flat hoses that were about to be filled with water
