Force 135 was formed to take part in the liberation of the channel islands on the 9th May 1945. I commanded 24 bomb Disposal Platoon RE and landed in Guernsey on the 12th May 1945. Our first duty was to clear 70,000 land mines which the German forces had laid around the island. This task was completed by the end of July 1945. Our next task was to clear all the underwater obstacles which had been put on all the beaches to prevent a landing from the sea. Our third task was to detonate some 1,000 Roll Bombs which had been suspended from the cliffs along the south coast. These bombs were 300lb. French shells and were wired to a zz35 igniter. If a landing had occurred at the base of the cliffs these shells would be cut free to detonate at the base of the cliffs. We then turned our attention to the anti-landing poles and spiders which covered large tracts of the island. These poles were wired via igniters to 300lb. French shells buried a short distance away from the pole. Their purpose was to prevent landinga by gliders or parachute troops.
