Dot (my mum) was 18 years old and working 12 hour shifts as a lathe turner operator in the Automatic telephones. She made communication equipment for submarines.Living in Wallasey she had to get a boat over to Liverpool and a tram down Edge Lane to work. She finished work at 7.0pm and had to walk down to the ferry, the trams had stopped running because an air raid was imminent. The warnings had been sounded and as she got to the church by Edge Lane/Durning Road a warden stopped her and told her to go down into the shelter by the church. Dot refused because she suffered from claustrophobia. The warden started to move her towards the shelter, but she pushed him away and ran off down Edge Lane towards the Pier Head.
When she got there the boats had also stopped so along with a great crowd of people she made herself as comfortable as possible. People around her shared what food was available and she witnessed the German bombers overhead. She was there all night In the morning she found out that there had been a direct hit on the Edge Lane shelter and well over a hundred people had been killed by steam escaping from the ruptured pipes.
