On March 16th 1941 my sister and I went to our Grandmothers off Pennywell Road. Whilst we were there the air raid sirens sounded. We took cover as much as we could and then the Blitz started. It was not long before we were told to evacuate the house as a timber yard had caught fire. We then went to the shelter at the top of the street until the all clear sounded. It was now time to return to our home, however, as we approached my elder Brother called to me to go and help him. It was to recover bodies from the cellar where they had been sheltering. Many of these were children that I had been playing with only hours before, luckily, my family were all present and safe. The bodies were then covered over by Miss G Walker. This was photographed and later published in the local paper, even though the Government were against this as it was not good for morale. We all returned to our home then and salvaged some of our belongings and returned to live with Grandma until our own house was habital.
