A absolute luxury during the war was custurd cream biscuits. However, the only ones available were usually very plain arrowroot and things of that sort. If the word got around that 'Browns have got custurd creams in!' there would be a stampede. Browns were a little family shop at the far end of Meadowbank Road in Hull. It was a case of 'first come, first served' as they usually had only one tin of biscuits to get through. Next door to Brown's there was a butcher, a Mr Holloway, and a grocer called Mrs Osier. These three shops are now part of a very smart private residential development.It is sometimes difficult to believe that as children shops had been there.
