My brother was only in the Forces eight months then he was captured. He was in Stalag XXA for about five and a half years. He used to get out of the camp and steal bread - the others said he was the only one with the nerve to do it. Then he and two others - another soldier and an airman - escaped. They met up with the Americans, then they were sent back. He brought two mates home: he had developed from a tall, slim lad into a big broad man - with only one tooth left in his head! The two mates were supposed to look after him - but he looked after them - "I could tell you come from a big family" - he was the eldest of nine. He had written a diary , but me mum wouldn't let us read it - said we were too young.
