WRAF Margaret Knowles
During the war Margaret, who will be 100 in March 2006, joined the WRAF. At first she was put into administration but did not like it and asked to be put in something more active.
They put her as the only woman in the camera division in Scotland where she used to climb into the plane and fix the large camera into the plane. When the plane returned she climbed in it again took the camera out. She also developed the film and everybody was always waiting outside the dark room to see the film. Unfortunately one day she was in the plane taking out the large and heavy camera and the engine caught fire. The pilot told her to jump out of the plane and as she did so fell awkwardly on to her shoulder and dislocated it. In those days there was no possibility of surgery to resetting it and so she lost the mobility in her arm.
