John was 5 years old when the war began in 1939. He was attending the Primary School in Wigton at the time.
He remembers when the school in nearby Silloth was closed to be used to bilet RAF Personnel. As the school was closed down, all of the pupils were sent to the Primary School in Wigton to continue with their studies.
The school day was split into two for these pupils. Students from Silloth came to the school from 9am and studied until 1pm. From 1pm, the existing pupils of Wigton primary school came to the school to study until 4.30pm.
He remembers catching a bus to the school from Station Hill in Wigton. John recalls that this went on for approximately two years.
