Having registered for the Militia in June 1939, I was called to serve in the RASC as a Driver the following October, because drivers were needed. But I could not drive, and never got taught!
I was in France from January - May 1940 and was rescued from the beach near Dunkirk.
Although I understood that I would not be sent abroad within six months, after two months I was aboard a troopship. After a six weeks voyage, we landed in Egypt, where I spent two months before being sent to Greece. From there I was evacuated once again and spent the next few months in Egypt, during which time I re-mustered as a clerk.
In September 1941 I was posted to Jerusalem, to serve under MI12 with the DCFC. After six months there I was sent to take over the office of the Censorship Unit in Haifa, where I spent the next two and a half years.
Then I returned to Egypt to await repatriation and arrived back in the UK in December 1944.
After a month's leave, I was posted to Edinburgh for two months and then despatched to the Continent, first Belgium, then Germany, until I was demobbed in January 1946.
