I was four years old when the war started and I spent the war years as a child in Clapham south London, spending a large part of the time in a anderson shelter,when the all clear went a group of us kids would embark on our favourite pastime scouring the streets looking for shrapnel and other relics from the bombing. We had an old mongrel dog and when the air raid siren went he would come hurtling up the road straight through the house and down into the air raid shelter beating us all.
