Heartfelt plea
When I started doing my French student work placement I had heard people say something on the phone which sounded like ne me quitte pas. I repeated this to a customer who fell about laughing. I should have said ne quittez pas which means "hold the line". Instead I had said "don't leave me"! It's also the title of a very famous French song by Jacques Brel ("If you go away" in English).

I was singing Jacques Brel's 'If We Only Have Love' in French at an audition. With great confidence - I'd been studying French for years, hadn't I? - I launched right in with Quand on n'a que l'amour... Unfortunately I pronounced l'amour as la mort - 'if we only have death'. The director was amused rather than appalled, but I still didn't get the part.
Ne me quitte pas: because of this song my husband and I are together sinces 1965, and we still love this song and specially Jacques Brell.
