Monet, Monet, Monet

Several years back my girlfriend and I were staying with a very gentle French couple in Toulouse. Over dinner, as our hosts were suggesting places to visit around the city, I thought they were suggesting a visit to a ³¾³Ü²õé±ð with an excellent collection de Monet. Being an art friend, I went on for a minute or two about Monet's control of colour and control of subject, especially with water subjects, yadda yadda yadda. Everyone, girlfriend included, looked at me as if I was crazy. After several stunned moments, my hostess graciously informed that that they were referring to a collection de monnaie - a currency museum, not a Monet collection. My French is a lot better now, but the memory still haunts me.

I stayed with a family in a Parisian suburb this past summer. I thought they had said "We will mock you" (moquer). Apparently, they said, "We will MISS you" (manquer)!

It was Christmas and only my second visit to my then fiancee's family and I was about to ask my fiancee's father for his daughter's hand in marriage (well rehearsed). There were oysters and I tried one for the first time. I wanted to say that I didn't like them very much and they tasted like the sea (La Mare) but I said Sa instead of La changing the meaning completely to they taste like your mother! He forgave me after he stopped laughing and later agreed to let us wed!
