Totally off the wall
A friend from France was visiting an old monastery in Ireland. A guide was taking a large group of French tourists around the estate and doing the tour in French, with an Irish accent. At the back of the garden area was a wall. He pointed and said, "c'est ici que certains moines faisaient la mour". Big silence amongst the French...
The guide made two mistakes of course. He didn't pronounce the word for "wall" properly, he wanted to say "mur". And "mur" is masculine, so he should have say "le" not "la".
What he said meant: "It's here that some monks used to make love", whenever he was trying to say that some monks "faisaient le mur" (a phrase literally meaning "jumping the wall", i.e. "escaping").
