National dish
I moved from Germany to America when I was five, so by the time I was in the second grade (age 7) I knew the language pretty well, but there were the occasional slip-ups.
One of those times, I was supposed to write a story about the different foods I liked and one of the teachers was helping me with ideas. I had said I liked rice and so she asked me what I liked with it, to which I replied in German: Mais, sweet corn. However, this sounds exactly like mice in English, and both of my teachers looked very confused and later asked my mother if it was a custom to eat a dish of rice with mice.

My son received an invitation to a children's birthday party in Germany. The invitation reminded the children to wear their "feste Schuhe." I wasn't sure what "party shoes" would be for a 9-yr-old boy. Turns out, he needed good-fitting, tight shoes to wear running around outdoors!
