Sudden inspiration

Some years ago, after having been in Rome for some weeks, I thought I was getting good at Italian. While doing some shopping at a grocers I meant to say, what I had heard many times before, prego, meaning "you're welcome, certainly". However I ended up saying, preghiamo, which I too heard every day, but at Mass. At first I got a smile from the shopkeeper, then he and other customers nearby started laughing. I did too, a few seconds later, when I realised my mistake. What I said was 'let us pray'!
