Buttered trousers
For our first family holiday abroad in Tenerife, my Dad had been on a short course in Spanish. He was crestfallen to find on arrival that most people spoke English rather well. Not wishing to be outdone, he decided to try out his language skills at a local shop. Wanting some butter to go with his bread for a picnic, he enquired Necesito mantequilla para poner en mi pana. The shopkeeper, initially perplexed, asked him to repeat his request, first to herself and then to the colleagues she had called over. Eventually, they let him in on the joke - he had asked for butter to spread on his corduroy fabric!
Editor's note: Well, he was nearly there! The word for bread in Spanish is, of course, el pan.
