I used to live in Spain and once, at a party at my house, I told a friend to 'give birth' - dar a luz instead of 'turn the light on' - encender la luz - much to the enjoyment of everybody else and to my great embarrassment!

In fact, she wasn't so wrong, as in Spanish you can also say dale a la luz or dar luz.
