I lived and worked in Spain for a year. Feeling very pleased when a customer in my shop commented on my improving Spanish, I told her that I had only been living in Spain para seis mesas. I was very red-faced when she explained that mesas meant tables! I should have said para seis meses. But how the Spanish love it when they see you are trying!

Actually, the correct preposition here would be por: "por seis meses"
"For" may be translated as "por" or "para" depending on context. When you mean "for a length of time", you should use por. Because you used para, it sounds like you lived in Spain to take care of those poor six tables!
Editor's note: Por is correct here. For a more idiomatic way of saying the same thing you could try 'hace seis meses que vivo en España'
