Norfolk County Council's cabinet backs 拢10m of cuts

A package of 拢10m of cuts will see the loss of 90 posts at Norfolk County Council, it has been announced.

The cutbacks include a 拢2.8m reduction in the 拢5.6m budget of the council's career advice service Connexions, leading to 65 posts being cut.

The savings have been agreed by the council's cabinet and are expected to be approved by the full council on 26 July.

The council said it had been hit by the loss of 拢10m of government grants.

Other measures backed by councillors include:

  • A loss of 拢306,500 in grants awarded via the Norfolk Youth Fund - used to fund facilities for young people - although grants already approved will still be paid.
  • A 拢434,000 reduction in grant for school holiday activities.
  • The deferral of about 30 safety schemes and public transport improvements, such as new footways to save 拢3.1m.

Council leader Daniel Cox said: "These cuts are painful. I wish we did not have to make them, but we do.

"The simple truth is where funding has been taken away from us, we can't afford to replace it."
