A charity in Whitley Bay has launched a supermarket to offer help to those falling into food crisis.

The group was already providing emergency food, but has now expanded into an on-site social supermarket.

The "Big Local" store will open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays and also boasts a funded community cooking initiative.

Shoppers will be able to purchase reduced price fruit and vegetables, milk, bakery items, tins and dried goods.

David Carnaffan, chief executive officer of the Whitley Bay Hub where the supermarket is located, said: 鈥淭he rising cost of living has impacted many of our residents.

鈥淭he choice and dignity affordable food provisions offer residents cannot be understated, and I鈥檓 grateful to The Big Local and other charities like it that are working with us to provide necessary support."

Karen Clark, from North Tyneside Council, said: 鈥淐harities like Whitley Bay Big Local are at the heart of communities in North Tyneside, offering a safe and welcoming space for our residents.鈥
