Ramsgate Tunnels to host free history event
A history day is being held to celebrate a network of hidden tunnels which played a crucial role in the defence of the UK in World War Two.
The secret town under Ramsgate became a refuge and provided shelter from air raids for 26,000 people.
The tunnels were abandoned after the war but 10 years ago they were restored and reopened by a group of volunteers.
To celebrate their anniversary Ramsgate Tunnels will host free event on 11 May, with stalls from heritage organisations and museums across Thanet and East Kent.
The special event will showcase the tales of the remarkable rescues and extraordinary explorers.
Visitors can attend short talks and a local history drop-in session.
Tours will be available throughout the day but must be booked in advance.
