A 20-year-old man is in hospital with a "serious" leg injury after being attacked with a machete.
It happened near Shakespeare Avenue in Grangetown, near Redcar, on Thursday just before 14:00 BST.
The injured man is said to be in a "stable" condition, as the police investigation continues.
An appeal is under way for anyone with information.
Det Sgt Holly Angus, from Cleveland Police, said officers were keen to speak to witnesses.
"If you were in the area at the time and may have witnessed the attack take place or perhaps you have CCTV or dashcam footage that could be useful to us, please do get in touch,鈥 she added.
