Electronics giant Sony will reorganise its main businesses in an attempt to regain lost ground.

The company said it will combine its TV, video game, mobile phone and PC businesses into one unit from April.

Sony has been losing market share to its rivals and last month cut its annual sales forecast for the current financial year.

The Japanese company announced it will promote the head of its video gaming unit, Kazuo Hirai, to lead the group.

Mr Hirai was responsible for the turnaround in Sony's video game business, with the launch of products like PlayStation and PlayStation portable.

This has given rise to speculation that Mr Hirai could eventually take charge of the entire company.

Even Sony's CEO, Howard Stringer, said Mr Hirai was an "obvious candidate" to succeed him.

The changes will be implemented in the company's coming financial year, which begins in April.
