Constituency Profile

Coatbridge is by far the largest of the towns in the constituency, which also incorporates the smaller communities of Glenboig, Stepps, and Auchinloch as well as Chryston.

Situated on Glasgow's eastern border, the area was once dominated by traditional industries and remains home to manufacturing, despite a decline over recent decades and unemployment figures above the national average. A sizeable proportion of residents live in rented public housing, with Calder in particular made up largely of council estates. The local authority for the area is North Lanarkshire Council, which has a budget of about £900m and delivers services to about 326,000 people.

Labour's Elaine Smith was first elected as Coatbridge and Chryston MSP at the first Scottish Parliament election in May 1999 and was re-elected to Holyrood in 2003 and 2007. She held the seat again in 2011, when she became one of the parliament's deputy presiding officers.
