Constituency Profile

This seat contains the more industrial part of the city of Dundee, and also the docks area that is important to the offshore oil industry. Shipbuilding has declined in the area, but there are a number of enterprise zones that have helped foster a mixture of industries. Housing in the seat ranges from middle-class residences, such as Broughty Ferry, to the council estates of Douglas and Linlathen.

Historically, Dundee was once a Liberal seat, and was represented in the Commons by Winston Churchill for 14 years. Dundee East has also been a Nationalist seat with the former SNP leader Gordon Wilson holding it from February 1974 until 1987 when John McAllion took it back for Labour.

Mr McAllion then became the MSP for the area in 1999, before the SNP's Shona Robison was elected to the Holyrood constituency in 2003, 2007 and 2011. The Westminster seat is currently held by Ms Robison's husband, Stewart Hosie.
