Constituency Profile

The seat is located in the industrial heart of Scotland, with its principal town, Motherwell, the base of North Lanarkshire Council.

Formerly known as the steel production capital of Scotland, the constituency contains the site of the former Ravenscraig steelworks, which were closed in 1992 and partially redeveloped as part of a regeneration project. Since the decline of heavy industry a number of call centres and business parks have been based in the area.

Motherwell has a historical significance for the SNP, as it was the scene of the 1945 Westminster by-election in which Dr Robert McIntyre became the party's first MP. He was an MP for only a few months, as Labour won the seat back at the 1945 general election. Former first minister Jack McConnell became MSP for this constituency in 1999. He retained the seat in 2003 and 2007, but didn't stand in 2011 when Labour's John Pentland was elected.
