Householders in Cornwall are being urged to swap real candles for battery powered alternatives.

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service said naked flames around the house spark hundreds of fires each year.

Mike Tremellen, prevention lead at Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service, said he wanted everyone to keep safe this Halloween.

He said: "It's easy to think that tea lights in the bathroom can be harmless but they can get very hot."

"We would suggest to our community they may wish to consider LED candles as a safer method to create and smoke-free and safe atmosphere", he added.

The force said if there was an accident that led to clothes catching fire, remember to "stop, drop and roll".
