A two-week long gun amnesty is to be launched by Cumbria Police.

From Monday, people in the county will be able to take firearms and ammunition into their local police station anonymously.

The move is part of a national scheme which allows people to hand over illegally owned and unwanted weapons without fear of prosecution.

Inspector Paul Telford said unlawful guns surrendered to the force will be disposed of safely.

It is the first amnesty in the county since 2004.

People can surrender weapons at the following police stations:

  • Carlisle

  • Penrith

  • Barrow

  • Kendal

  • Ulverston

  • Cockermouth

  • Whitehaven

  • Workington

The amnesty ends on 21 November.
