A man who started a fire at his friend's flat, killing a cat and causing thousands of pounds of damage, has been jailed.

Blake Parry threw a burning object into an open window in Alison Close, Chaddesden, Derby, on 4 August.

The occupant, with whom Parry, of Ripon Crescent, Derby, had argued, was out but their pet was killed and around 拢26,000 of damage caused.

The 22-year-old, who admitted arson, was given a three year prison sentence.

On Friday, Derby Crown Court heard the affected property was surrounded by bungalows for elderly people.

Judge Jonathan Straw called the attack "serious and mean" but noted Parry had called the emergency services while still at the scene.
