Part of a Dorset tourist beach will be closed for a week for sea wall maintenance.

Weymouth beach will be closed at Greenhill Gardens while work is carried out on the promenade.

As part of the scheme, Portland stone is being brought in to protect the bottom of the wall.

The beach will be closed to the public to allow the heavy machinery to operate safely. Pedestrian access to the promenade may also be affected.

Dorset Council said the closure, beginning on Monday, would stretch from Seascape Cafe south towards the Beach Cafe at the end of Brunswick Terrace.

It said, without the work, the foundations of the sea wall could be undermined, causing significant damage to the promenade over time.

Environment councillor Ray Bryan said: "Despite the continuing inclement weather, this area continues to see high footfall and we're grateful for people's patience and understanding while we carry out this essential work."
