Turkeys rescued from Forest of Dean barn fire

  • Published

Some 100 turkeys have been saved from a barn fire in the Forest of Dean.

The birds were removed to safety away from the blaze which has "severely damaged" the barn, a tractor and a combine harvester in Mitcheldean.

Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service said it received several calls at 04:15 GMT and five fire engines were sent to Jubilee Road.

Fire crews also removed some gas cylinders from the barn which contained 50 tonnes of hay.

'Due to be slaughtered'

The fire is believed to have been caused by an electrical fault in the barn and was extinguished by 06:45 GMT.

Fire station commander Dave Pike said: "I understand the birds had been readied for Christmas, and I don't think this morning's incident is really going to change that.

"They were corralled to a safe place elsewhere on the farm, and all are doing fine.

"But, as I understand it, they are still due to be slaughtered."
